Leaving Tokyo

My flight to San Fran. In Japan, have minutes left. Yes, international flights get big planes.

Will never forget, first flying to Tokyo. First Denver to LAX, where met a few other Maryland faculty. Leaving LA, we actually took north, then west — guess it was something about avoiding the jet stream, which blows (loosely) west to east. Thought we would be crossing the Pacific, forever. More Pacific. More Pacific. Sleep awhile. More Pacific. Eventually, timed so well, looked out and saw green — and knew it was Japan.

Flying Tokyo to the United States can be perhaps an hour faster, as if the plane can, it catches the jet stream, gets extra speed for, well, less petrol.
